When you stack four or five coils, each coil sits on top of the previous one rather than against the post itself. The outer coils aren’t gripping metal โ€” they’re gripping other coils. Under a bend, those layers shift against each other by a fraction of a millimeter, and the pitch walks. Strum chords and it stays put, which is why the problem hides until you bend.

The fix: Cut the string roughly two tuning posts past the one you’re targeting. Thread it, pull it snug, and wind while maintaining tension with your other hand. Aim for about two to three coils on the wound strings and three on the plain strings, stacked neatly downward from the top of the post. Symptom: Persistent Flatness for the First Two Sessions After a Restring

Likely cause: Not enough stretch cycles.

A fresh string elongates as its core settles under tension. One firm tug per string distributes some slack, but the metal needs repeated tension-and-release cycles to seat fully against the nut, saddle, and post. One pass is rarely enough; three to five passes is typical.

The fix: After tuning all six strings to pitch, stretch each one by gripping it at the twelfth fret and pulling it away from the fingerboard by roughly 2โ€“3 cm, then releasing. Retune. Repeat. Stop when a full stretch-and-tune pass drops any string by less than about two cents. Symptom: The String Slips Through the Post Hole While You’re Winding

Likely cause: Not enough initial tension before you start turning the peg.

The most common cause of a slipped string isn’t the post โ€” it’s letting go of the string’s tail before the first full wrap is established. Once one wrap is locked in, the string holds itself. Before that first wrap, it doesn’t.

Symptom: One Post Has Five Coils, the Next Has One and a Half

Likely cause: Inconsistent string cutting lengths.

Uneven wraps across the headstock are ugly, but they also cause uneven behavior. A post with too few wraps can slip under heavy playing; a post with too many drifts during bends. The guitar plays inconsistently because each string has a different amount of mechanical slack at the post.

The fix: Build a consistent cutting habit. Before cutting, bring the string up past its target post by the same measurement every time โ€” usually two post widths of extra length. Do it the same way for all six strings and the coil counts will match without you having to count them.
