A tuning peg and a bridge pin both look like small pieces of hardware you twist or push into place, but they do opposite jobs. A peg winds string around itself to create tension at the headstock. Step 3: Insert the Ball End and Set the Pin at the Right Angle
Drop the ball end of the new string into the hole first, then follow it with the string itself before placing the pin. This order matters — pin first, ball end second is how people end up trapping the string against the wrong side of the slot, which causes buzzing or a pin that won’t seat flush.
The pin itself has a grooved side, and that groove should face the string, giving it a clear channel to sit in as tension builds. Push the pin down while pulling the string gently upward at the same time. You’re not forcing the pin to grip anything on its own — you’re just seating it enough that string tension can take over. Step 4: Route the String to the Tuning Post With Enough Slack
Pull the string up toward its matching tuning post and estimate slack by giving yourself roughly two to three finger-widths of extra length past the post before cutting or winding. Too little slack means not enough wraps around the post to hold tuning stability. Too much creates a bulky, uneven winding that looks sloppy and can affect how cleanly the string settles at pitch.
For the wound bass strings, a bit more slack helps produce a cleaner set of descending wraps. For the plain treble strings, slightly less slack keeps the winding tight and controlled, since those thinner strings tend to bunch up messily if given too much room to wind.
Step 5: Wind the String Around the Post With Downward Wraps
Feed the string through the post hole, bend it sharply back on itself to create a small kink, and begin winding so each wrap sits below the previous one, moving down toward the headstock face. Winding downward like this locks the string against the post more securely than letting wraps climb upward or cross over each other.
Keep light tension on the string with your free hand as you turn the tuning key. This isn’t about cranking it tight yet — you’re just preventing loose, sloppy coils from forming while the post does its winding. Three to five clean wraps is the target for most acoustic strings; fewer than that on the wound strings can sometimes let them slip during heavy tuning changes.
Step 6: Bring Each String Up to Pitch Gradually
Tune each string up in stages rather than cranking it directly to pitch on the first pass. Go around the full set two or three times, bringing each string a bit closer each round. This spreads tension onto the neck and bridge evenly instead of loading one side of the guitar all at once, which matters more on acoustic bridges than most players expect given how much force those pins are quietly resisting.

Step 7: Stretch the Strings and Retune
New strings drop in pitch fast during their first hour of playing, and that’s normal — it’s the string settling into its final position at the post and against the bridge, not a defect. Skipping this step doesn’t ruin anything, but it means you’ll be retuning constantly for the next day or two of playing instead of getting the string settled in one sitting.
Step 8: Trim the Excess and Do a Final Check
Once everything holds tuning through a stretch-and-retune cycle, clip the excess string near each tuning post, leaving a short tail rather than cutting flush against the post. Run a finger along each cut end to make sure nothing’s sharp enough to catch on your hand during play.
Give the bridge pins one more visual pass. Each should sit flush and even with its neighbors — a pin sitting noticeably higher or lower than the rest usually means the ball end isn’t resting correctly, even if the string is currently holding tune. Better to catch that now than after a week of play when the string finally shifts and drops out of tune on its own.
